Objective: To study the lipid profile in patients with hypothyroidism. Methods: The study was carried out in our hospital for a period of one year. The study included 100 hypothyroid patients and 100 healthy subjects .Their serum samples were assessed for TSH,T4 and T3 , total cholesterol , triglycerides, low density lipoprotein(LDL) cholesterol and high density lipoprotein(HDL) cholesterol by using standard biochemical methods after taking informed consent. Results: Out of 100 hypothyroid patients 45 (45%) were males and 55 (55%) were females. 75 patients presented with clinical hypothyroidism and 25 patients with subclinical hypothyroidism. Maximum number of patients were in age group of 30-45 years. 85.3% of clinical hypothyroid patients showed high serum cholesterol level, while 44% of subclinical hypothyroid patients showed high serum cholesterol level. 68% of subclinical hypothyroid patients showed high serum triglyceride level (>150mg/dl), while 85.3% of clinical hypothyroidism patients showed high triglyceride level.

Serum LDL level was high (>160 mg/dl) in 78.6% of patients with clinical hypothyroidism, while 68% of patients with subclinical hypothyroidism showed higher value. 40% of subclinical hypothyroid patients showed low(<40 mg/dl) serum HDL value while all patients with clinical hypothyroidism had low serum HDL level. Conclusion: The frequencies of the high cholesterol, high TG , high LDL with low HDL levels were higher in the hypothyroid group, thus indicating that hypothyroid patients were more prone for dyslipidemia, which is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disorders.
ER -
